About the atlas

Why we keep looking at paper maps in a digital age.

Slow cartography

This site is a small, deliberately quiet corner of the web. No cookies, no scripts phoning home, no recommendations. Just maps, described plainly.

Sources & rights

Most images come from public domain archives: the Library of Congress, the British Library, and a handful of university collections. Where an item is under copyright, we link to the holding institution instead of reproducing it.

How to use this site

Every page is plain HTML. The only JavaScript is a tiny menu toggle for small screens — and the site works fine without it. No tracking, no analytics. Read, look, and close the tab when you’re done.
